Summer is right around the corner here in Michiana. Before you know it, we'll be basking in the summer sun surrounded by the smells of hot dogs and hamburgers on the grill...with pool floaties close in tow. As the months get hotter, ensure that your home stays comfortable once temperatures rise.
Here are some helpful energy savings tips to try this summer thanks to Indiana Michigan Power.
- Increase your attic insulation if the joists are showing. Recommended level: R-38 or 10-16 inches blown. For more information on the insulation services we provide, click here: https://www.drenergysavernorthernindiana.com/insulation.html
- Try setting the thermostat to a minimum of 78 degrees. You can also circulate cool air using box fans and ceiling fans.
- Close any shades to keep your home cooler. If you aren't a fan of closing the shades for the entire day, keep them closed when the day is at peak temperatures, normally between 12p-4p.
- Change your heating and cooling filters. Clean filters can lower the air conditioner’s energy consumption 5-15%.
According to the U.S Department of Energy, space heating and cooling accounts for almost half of a home's energy use making it some of the largest energy expenses for any residential structure. By implementing even a few of these, you can cut costs without sacrificing comfort.
